A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas and are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating gum disease.
Gum disease affects millions of people every year, and it is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. Since gum disease can cause few symptoms in its early stages, many people have no idea they have it until they develop loose teeth or severe pain. It is often easy to overlook until major problems occur and this is why regular professional cleanings remain so important.
Symptoms of Periodontal Infection
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Tooth sensitivity to heat/cold
- Persistent bad breath
- Deep pockets around the teeth
- Spaces between the teeth
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Missing teeth
- Gums receding around the teeth (longer looking teeth)
Treatment of Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease comes in stages, and gingivitis is the most common and simplest form. It is usually completely reversible and treatable. Your individual needs will determine the best course of treatment. If you have the onset of periodontal disease or gingivitis specifically, improving your oral health routine at home by brushing twice daily and flossing, followed by regular professional dental cleanings, will typically correct the problem.
The later stages of gum disease are more severe, and problems can develop quickly if you do not treat it immediately. Depending on the severity of the situation, the periodontist may try a multitude of non-surgical treatments first. Scaling and root planning (deep cleaning) is a good example. During this deep cleaning procedure, your doctor will scrape away (scale) plaque and tartar from above and below your gum line. Then, any rough spots on your roots will be planned (smoothed) to remove bacteria, restoring a clean surface so your gums can reattach to your teeth. Often the periodontist will prescribe local antimicrobials and rinses.
Surgical treatments for severe periodontal disease are specific for each patient. Reducing the pocket depth, bone and tissue grafting, and surgery for cosmetic improvement, are all treatments that can save teeth.
Tooth loss can have a significant impact on your overall health and other aspects of your life, including your self-esteem. If there is tooth loss due to the advanced stages of periodontal disease, your periodontist may recommend dental implants for restoring oral form and function.
